Across The Northern Border

Last November, the vibraphonette and The Quavers had a harrowing experience on the way up to Montreal to play a show with our good friend, Harris Newman. The trip started out smoothly enough, but soon we were on the shoulder-less New York State Thruway with a flat tire. Todd skillfully managed to hop the curb so we could try and change the right/rear tire with a very very tiny spare, which was stored underneath all of out gear - including the vibraphonette. Thankfully all the gear fit on top of the car so there was no muddied vibraphonette! We put the spare on and slowly made our way to a service station to get a more solid replacement.

We played a very friendly vegetarian cafe called Casa Del Popolo. Highly recommended if you visit Montreal. The show was great and it was wonderful to see our friends again. Hopefully next time the car ride will be much less exciting.

  • I purchased a vibraphonette in Sydney, Australia (secondhand) in 1963. It's still in pretty good shape, except the bands have now deteriorated. I'd appreciate any ideas as to where I can get replacements. My name is Vaila and my friends like to say, "Hey Vibra! Play us another song on your Vailaphonette"

  • Hey Dennis,

I don't know how else I can get in touch with you as I'm new to blogger. I really want to get a hold of a vibraphonette and I was just wondering if you had any bright ideas or tips to help out. Thanks!

  • hello vaila and aaron,

vaila - my vibraphonette came with no belts at all so i have been using belts from a vcr. dvd players are starting to take over so some of the vcr repair shops have closed down. if you can't find a shop near you then there should be some available online. and please do send along pictures of your vibraphonette so i can post them!

aaron - i think the best place to find a vibraphonette is ebay. unfortunately, the prices are started to really take off so bidding will be tough on the wallet! good luck!! let us know if you find one.

  • Greetings,

I'm new to this blog. I'm the proud owner of a 2.5 octave Galanti Vibraphonette. I've had it for the past 14 years.
If you're having trouble finding replacement belts, you can try www.mcmaster.com
    (Search under O-Rings)
You can select the width diameter/inner & outer diameter.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!
